How do I pay estimated taxes for a private foundation?

All private foundation tax payments including estimated taxes must be made electronically via the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), which is administered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. EFTPS is the standard system used by businesses and other legal entities to make payments to the federal government. The system is free to use and is considered secure. Private foundations must use EFTPS to pay employment tax, excise tax, unrelated business income tax, and quarterly estimated tax. Payments cannot be made via postal mail with a regular check.

Before it is possible to make any tax payments, private foundations must first enroll in EFTPS using their Employee Identification Number. New enrollments for EFTPS can take up to five business days to process. In order to be considered timely paid when using EFTPS, the payment must be scheduled during business hours one business day before the payment is due.
